Lightbox, Thickbox, greybox and LyteBox: Overlay on the Web August 3, 2007
Recently the design of some two sites I wanted to use the opening images and the presentation of Flash as a window overlay. Quite well prepared four solutions tested this functionality: Lightbox, Thickbox, and LyteBox greybox. All have their pros and cons, what I would like to tell in this entry.
LightBox First off, I have already praised the subjectivist, LightBox. Well, LightBox is almost perfect - it works smoothly and flawlessly. Certainly deserve a plus (+) easy to install and (+) great animation, and image size changes are put forward to sign, which looks quite. Almost (+) everything is nicely configurable. But there are also disadvantages: Well, (-) LB does not work against the full loading of the entire site: When you click on the link it to the caller before the end of the page loads - the image will open in a new window. The second minus is even worse: (-) LB overlayu lets you view only the images! And the third minus (-) LB uses the jQuery library Prototype. And as you know, different js libraries are able to be with you "bite."
Thickbox On the LightBox'a author provide a link to thickbox which displays not only images but also any other content in the window overlay. Well: something for something - Thickbox (-) is not as visually attractive, does not animate and frankly looks a bit blocky. Although (+) can display all, after two days of testing have refrained from using it. Why? Well, I found two serious deficiencies in the operation of TB: 1) (-) When you see the image does not fit in the window, TB, it automatically scales down.Unfortunately the scales by cutting the line that looks tragic. 2) (-) Do not know why, in IE window TB appeared to me to be always close to the upper edge of the site, despite the fact that TB fired away from the place of about 1000px below. This excludes any utility (the site of the demonstration TB works fine, but I can not help even a dual TB and re-install a freshly installed on another page). 3) (-) Select the link which is to be run by TB is carried out by assigning the class "thickbox", what can we furrow our layout - I had to combine to combine two different CSS classes. In other embodiments overlayowych is done by assigning religious or onClick parameter, which is convenient and useful. 4) And for good measure, (-) uses jQuery thickbox.You are also quite fun to install and configure (+). :)
Greybox
 Our next hero is a little similar to thickbox. Greybox (+) does not use any external libraries, which of course goes to him, plus - you can use it anywhere. Looks good (although that feeling may be subjective). As there is no such wypasionych animation as LB, but it looks and behaves nicely (IMO looks very nice photo viewer.) Fired by the JS function is described in the onClick, which is convenient. Besides, is devoid of strange behavior in IE, everywhere behaves the same way. (+) Or unqualified installation. On the minus and deserves a little difficult to setup - (-) class names in CSSie are not transparent and intuitive, a lot of things you need to fix a few times to get the desired look. In addition, GB really nice and it just fell on him my choice.
LyteBox LyteBox is substantially similar to a lightbox (perhaps because it is based on it), but (+) can display iframki (so the window can display an overlay (in theory) all you can see the browser). (+) Looks aesthetically and animates nicely, although it lacks the "climate", which can be felt when using a lightbox. (+) Has a useful auto-slideshow option, through which would make a great photo gallery for advanced, if not the fact that it has the same shortcoming as Thickbox - (-) scales the image by cutting the line to suit the size of the display area. And - although seriously IMO, it was the only downside. LyteBoxa (+) installs and configures, and uses very conveniently and intuitively. It does not require any external libraries (although in previous versions used the Prototype). Links open LyteBoxem rel parameter is defined, so our styles are our links styles:)

On his blog PerfectionOrVanity.com (BTW the new lay his blog is very cool, and new name - very apt. Although for the first time I read PerversionOrVanity;)), Riddle developed and described the solution to opening a window overlay, mainly using CSS, and minimizing the use of JavaScript. True, its solution is not tested, but it looks promising. So I put the link as a bonus.
